About Coach Lisa

Lisa has been playing and coaching volleyball for the past 45 years.  This will be her 9th year coaching at West E.

Lisa is a graduate of Iroquois High School in Erie, where she played volleyball and softball. She was a 4 year letterman in volleyball and played first base on the 1982 State Champion and 1981 State Runner-up softball teams. She received the Female Athletic Leadership Award.  Lisa was inducted into the Iroquois Hall of Fame in 2015.

After high school, Lisa went on to play college volleyball at Penn State-Behrend. She was named to NAIA District 18 Second team volleyball squads, 1983 and 1984. She graduated with an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts and began her coaching career as assistant coach at her alma mater, Iroquois. Lisa transferred to Edinboro University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education and a minor in Athletic Coaching.  At Edinboro, she earned the Most Outstanding Senior Award, the Captain's Award and was named to the PSAC West All-Tournament and All-Conference volleyball teams, 1985 and 1986.  Having caught the coaching bug, Lisa continued as an assistant at Edinboro for a season then onto Seneca High School and then back to Iroquois for her first Head Coaching position.

Moving to the Pittsburgh area, Lisa began a 13 year run as the head girls' coach at Riverview High School and a 3 year run as the assistant boys' coach at Deer Lakes HS.  Add to the resume, numerous summer camp positions along with 10 summers at the Saint Francis University Individual Skills Camp. Club coaching experiences besides West E include the Spartans volleyball club and the original Pittsburgh Golden Triangle club.  Lisa also coached her daughter, Coach Rachel Amerson, at Freeport for 3 years and taught her daughter, Courtney, to serve overhand while Lisa was the assistant coach with the girls' program at Deer Lakes.  For many years, she played on adult women's teams in the OVR and co-ed teams in tournaments and weekly leagues in the Pittsburgh area.

Lisa lives in Sarver and drives a forklift at the Aldi Warehouse.  Her younger daughter, Courtney played for West E for 3 years and was the setter on Freeport's 2017 State Championship and WPIAL runner-up volleyball team.  She was a 1st team All-Section and All-State player for Freeport and an All-Conference and All-PAC setter on the Thiel College Volleyball team.  Lisa's oldest daughter and West E coach, Rachel Amerson, was a Senior on Freeport's first WPIAL championship team and an  All-Section team selection.  Volleyball is a great passion in the Grubby house!

Lisa is excited for another great season of volleyball at West E!

More about Coach Lisa.......

Who is your favorite athlete?
Karch Kiraly

What is your favorite quote?
"I woke up this morning and just hated everything."  Lara Croft

What is your best or funniest volleyball memory?
While coaching at Riverview HS, I was hitting balls crosscourt at my Varsity players at practice.
My 4 year old Rachel jumped in the passing line as usual and I proceeded to crank a hard driven
ball at her. She dug it up with ease to target. My players felt a little bit of pressure cause if the
4 year old could do it....

What do you love about coaching?
Watching young athletes grow and learn and improve and succeed.

What is one piece of advice to give West E players?
Always give 110%.  Move with a purpose.
